DIGITAL RIGHTS MANAGEMENT

DIGITAL RIGHTS MANAGEMENT

Introduction:
Computers and the internet have transformed the way we work , learn, communicate and entertained.
Some of technology’s potential to do even more has not been fully realized, because of concerns about illegal use of digital information, about confidentiality and about privacy.
DRM introduced in the late 1990s but was not widely used by consumers
Software vendors have designed several DRM tools and some have been successful but  some have not

  Basic terms
•What do you mean by Digital Rights Management?
Digital- refers to the medium of he material over  which the rights exists.
Rights- applies to the intellectual property rights, primarily copyright, linked to the material.
Management- involves defining a policy and enforcing that policy in such a way that rights are respected.

WHAT IS DIGITAL RIGHTS MANAGEMENT?
Technology that protects content owners' rights while selling and distributing the content online in a digital form.
Introduces new possibilities for selling, distributing and consuming content and therefore does not only involve the prevention of piracy.
Advantages
For content owners
–owners can quickly and easily offer their media online
–they can maintain the integrity of their copyrights, no matter how widely circulated their digital material is
For content providers
–remain confident that their digital media files will stay protected, no matter how widely they are distributed
For consumers
– can then enjoy digital music in a convenient and legal way
Importance of DRM for Artists and Corporations
Images, Files and Programs
–Many of big companies are using now DRM to protect their goods
Protecting copyright
–DRM is basically intended to protect the copyright owners from losing sales of their e-books, DVD’s and other items. The theory goes that the easier it is to copy and distribute digital works through the internet and on compact discs, the more sales the copyright owner will lose out on, and hence the less money they will earn from their own work.

Conclusion..
Therefore, DRM technology was created for the publishers of these works as a means to stop the illegal reproduction and distribution of their products.

  1. Hi all,

DRM is necessary to fight copyright infringement online, and that it can help the copyright holder maintain artistic control or ensure continued revenue streams. DRM technologies enable content publishers to enforce their own access policies on content, like restrictions on copying or viewing. Thanks...
